Monrovia — The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, today, September 2, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to former President H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf following a call from the former President expressing concern over coastal erosion and other environmental challenges facing Liberia.

Madam Sirleaf commended Dr. Urey Yarkpawolo’s leadership and the EPA’s recent progress, urging heightened focus on combating sea erosion, strengthening beach protection, and conserving wetlands. She reiterated her willingness to support the EPA’s mission.

Dr. Urey Yarkpawolo thanked the former President for her sustained interest in environmental issues and noted the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental management nationwide. He said the EPA’s work is fully aligned with and supported by the Government’s ARREST agenda, highlighting recent milestones:

– Upgrading of the EPA Headquarters

– Opening of a state-of-the-art environmental laboratory

– Stronger enforcement of the Environmental Protection and Management Law

– Active participation in international climate and environmental engagements

He also acknowledged Madam Sirleaf’s role in shaping his leadership journey, citing her support for young Liberians to benefit from the Les Aspin Center for Government in Washington, D.C., where he received training that transformed his career.

The EPA, with support from national stakeholders, reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Liberia’s environment for future generations.
