Monrovia, Liberia, October 20, 2025 — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia, in collaboration with the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) and the United Nations in Liberia, participated in a citywide clean-up campaign over the weekend in observance of Climate Action Day.

The exercise covered Central Monrovia and surrounding communities, mobilizing EPA staff, UN agencies, city workers, and residents to clear litter from major streets and public spaces.

Observed globally, Climate Action Day underscores the urgency of tackling climate change through practical steps that reduce pollution, improve waste management, and protect ecosystems—actions that individuals, institutions, and governments can take now.

UN Resident Coordinator Christine N. Umutoni highlighted Liberia’s long-standing role in the United Nations as the UN marks 80 years. “Liberia is a founding member of the UN and now serves on the UN Security Council. We celebrate Liberia’s leadership and reaffirm that keeping our cities clean is essential to protecting the environment. This should be a regular habit—weekly if possible, or at least monthly,” she said.

For his part, Monrovia City Manager and Acting Mayor Jones Williams thanked the UN and EPA for their partnership. “The UN believes in sustainability, and we in Liberia are committed to embedding that in our waste management systems,” he noted.

Speaking for the EPA, Tennema Coleman, Assistant Manager for Inter-Sectoral Affairs, reiterated the Agency’s mandate. “A clean, safe, and healthy environment is central to our mission. We are proud to work with the UN, MCC, and communities to turn policy into action,” she said, thanking partners and residents for what she called “a true example of teamwork and national unity.”

The EPA encourages citizens, businesses, and institutions to maintain regular clean-up activities, segregate waste at the source, and use approved disposal channels to build a cleaner, healthier, and climate-resilient Liberia.
