Monrovia, Liberia: October 10, 2025 — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia announces the launch of a formal investigation into an environmental incident reported at ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) Yuelliton mining area in Nimba County.
On October 4, 2025, AML notified the EPA of an accident that exposed iron‑rich sediments along the southwestern edge of the Yuelliton basecamp and the western slope of the mining site. Subsequent rainfall events mobilized these sediments into nearby river systems, with reported impacts on farmlands west of Yuelliton and contamination of water bodies around Bonla Village.
Immediately upon notification, the EPA deployed a team of environmental technicians to the affected area to conduct a comprehensive environmental quality assessment. Ongoing field activities include sampling and analysis of soil, water, and sediments to determine the extent of contamination, assess potential risks to local communities, and evaluate the impacts on surrounding ecosystems.
The EPA is currently compiling and analyzing field data. The Agency reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting Liberia’s environment and public health. Appropriate corrective and regulatory actions will be determined and communicated upon completion of the investigation.
The EPA is also engaging local authorities, community representatives, and the operator to ensure timely mitigation and transparency.
